FRUIT BODY: Up to 14cm tall. A darkish fungus with a deeply pitted cap that is similar to one or two other species. The pits of this species however tend to come in vertical rows and the cap is more conical. The irregular honey-comb like surface is firm to the touch and the inner wall of each pit is tan to greyish. GILLS/PORES: N/A. FLESH: Granular and brittle with no distinctive taste or smell. SPORES: Cream and elliptical. HABITAT: On well drained soil or disturbed ground beneath hedges and deciduous trees and shrubs. SEASON: Infrequent.  Spring. EDIBILITY: Inedible.
